미국 전국에서 450 여 명에게 상이 수여되는 물리 올림피아드 입상은 대학 입시에 확실한 분수령을 만들어 줍니다. (참고: MIT 입학생 수는 약 1100 명, ivy 대학 입학생 수는 약 15,000 명, 미국 고등학교 수는 약 25,000.) 당신의 자녀가 현재 라이징 10학년 이하이면, 지금부터 물리 올림피아드를 준비해도 늦지 않습니다.
모든 학생들이 초등학교부터 수학을 배우고, 수학을 웬만큼 한다는 학생들이 관심을 갖고 경쟁하는 수학 올림피아드는 수많은 경쟁자들이 저변에 많이 퍼져 있기 때문에 이런 학생들을 제치고 USAMO에 선발되는 것은 무척 어렵습니다. (약 5천 명 정도가 물리 올림피아드 응시. 경쟁자 숫자로 비교하면, 물리 올림피아드에 될 가능성은 수학 올림피아드에 비해서 약 10배 정도 큼) 비록, 물리 올림피아드에 선발되는 것이 수학 올림피아드와 비교해서 비교적 쉽다고 하더라도, 물리 올림피아드에 일단 선발되면 그 효과는 수학 올림피아드에 못지않을 것입니다.
수학에 흥미와 재능이 있는 학생들은 물리도 잘할 가능성이 많습니다. 여러분의 자녀가 현재 10학년 이하의 어린 학생이라면, 지금부터라도 물리 공부 시작하는 것을 추천합니다. 또한, 물리 올림피아드에 선발될 수 있는 가능성 및 그 잠재력에 대해서 오랜 기간 동안 물리 올림피아드를 지도해온 선생님과 상의해 보시기를 권합니다.
The USA Physics Olympiad begins in late January, with the F = ma exam. Approximately 6,000 students take this first exam, which consists of 25 multiple choice questions to be solved in 75 minutes. This exam is mostly mechanics, along with some fluid mechanics and wave mechanics questions. The top 10% of scorers, which is usually about 450 people, advance to become the US Physics Olympiad Semi-finalist. All these USAPhO qualifiers receive certificates of recognition for their physics skill.
The next round is the USA Physics Olympiad, which covers many topics, including Thermodynamics, Relativity, Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, and occasionally Quantum Mechanics. There is an A and a B section. The A section is a ninety-minute test with four problems, each worth twenty-five points. One will be on Mechanics, and one will be on electricity and magnetism. The other two are usually thermodynamics and relativity, but occasionally there will be a curveball. The B section is a ninety-minute test with two problems, each worth fifty points. One is Mechanics, and one is on electricity and magnetism. These questions are essay questions, and each is graded primarily on the accuracy of the ideas, rather than the accuracy of the answers.
Of these contestants, about one-twelfth receives gold medals, one-sixth receives silver medals, and one-fourth receives bronze medals. Another one-fourth receives honorable mention status. Out of the gold medals (which number thirty to forty), twenty of them attend the training camp. Multiple factors are considered, like whether or not they have conflicting summer camps (like RSI, USACO Camp, or MOP) and their grade (11th graders are favored).
